Differences Between Centrifugal Pump and Axial Flow Pump?

What is the differences between these two kinds of pump?Centrifugal pump and axial flow pump have a wide range of applications in industry, here to introduce the difference and application of the two pumps.

  1. Different starting methods
    When the centrifugal pump starts, the outlet valve should be closed, because the power is minimum at this time, and the valve is open, which is easy to burn the motor.
    When the axial flow pump starts, the outlet valve should be opened, because the power is minimum at this time, and the valve is closed, which is easy to burn the motor.
  2. Fluid flow is different
    The fluid flow of the centrifugal pump is from the center to the periphery, that is, along the direction of centrifugal force;the flow direction of the axial flow pump is along the axis.
  3. different scope of application
    Centrifugal pumps are suitable for higher head and smaller flow, such as water supply, drainage, air conditioning circulation, etc.
    Axial flow pump is suitable for large flow, low head, such as irrigation, drainage, cooling and so on.
  4. Different efficiency
    The efficiency of the centrifugal pump decreases with the increase of flow and head, and the maximum efficiency point is relatively narrow, generally between 70% and 90%;
    The efficiency of kind of pumps is higher at high flow and low head, usually between 80%-90%.
  5. Different shape and structure
    The inlet and outlet caliber of the centrifugal pump is usually the same, showing a circular shape structure;
    The inlet and outlet diameter of the axial flow pump is different, showing the shape of the pipeline.
  6. impeller shape is different
    The impeller of the centrifugal pump is curved, showing an arc;
    The impeller of the axial flow pump is straight and presents a spiral shape.

In general, centrifugal pumps are suitable for high head and small flow situations, while axial flow pumps are suitable for large flow and low head situations.
